So far Old Galvez has dodged the bullet this hurricane season but now it looks like the old girl’s luck has just run out.
Hurricane Ike, expected to be a Cat 3 storm by the time it makes landfall early Saturday morning, is bearing down, now projected to hit Galveston square on.
As with most hurricanes, this one has a wobble to it so exactly where it will come ashore isn’t yet known. If the eye ultimately passes directly over Galveston, she’ll be luckier than if Ike makes landfall more to the south and west. In that case, this old town would find herself on the “dirty” side of this nasty hurricane, the worst of all places to be.
But since the disastrous 1900 storm, which very nearly stomped the life out of her once and for all, somehow Galveston has managed to survive each season’s onslaught and bounce back. So let’s hope for the best … and also say a little prayer that she’ll make it through again.
Good luck, Galveston. We love you.
