The Krauss Report: 01/28/09

Posted: March 25th, 2009 under Recovery Galvez.

And now, folks, the first installment of that brand new, eagerly anticipated news feature, The Krauss Report! Okay, so this initial report is a couple of months old now. Well, that’s the fault of your humble yet procrastinating blog author. Still, what a great first salvo from our embedded roving-the-island reporter! Sure makes me long for a Galveston conch of my very own (sniff sniff). Enjoy!

Hello, my friend. Love the blog. As you pine for the 32 miles of salt, sand, and southern hospitality from afar, I will serve as your local eyes and ears, with honor, if you like.

So much has transpired over the last four months it would be futile to attempt to catch up, but rest assured our little diamond is scratched a bit but far from crushed. The spirits of the locals is that of determination and hope. We tire a bit from time to time but are never still. We just simply forge on “Island Style.” Take a break in the sun, enjoy a cold beer and pull yourself up by your flipflops, dust off the sand and get back to it.

I will find you some links to local photo bugs so you can experience the Gulf of Mexico like you have never seen it before, at least not from a Galveston perspective. The water has been incredibly blue since the storm. I’ve been told that the first two sand bars were washed out so the sun has nothing else to reflect on but the fabulous azure waters.

Another benefit of the change in tides is the delivery of the ocean’s jewels to your feet. I, like most, am infected with the childlike curiosity of shell hunting. The loot is so bountiful these days I hardly make it more than a few yards before I need a bucket for my treasures. So much has been unearthed from the erosion. Last week, I was in Bermuda Beach showing some beachfront property (which was third row four months ago) when I made the biggest discovery of my lifelong hunt. A fabulous blue and white conch the size of an orange! My clients surely thought I had lost my mind as I ran towards them squealing like a school girl to share my prize. We also found a handful of sharks’ teeth. Treasures indeed!

Well, I have exhausted my pot of coffee already, so I’ll get on with my day now. Next time, I’ll share with you our move yesterday to our new office downtown. It was so good to be back in the middle of the commerce. Things are moving a bit faster than your normal “Island Time” but for now, this is the “new normal.” Whatever normal is …

  1. Thanks for the update, Cindy. Great to hear from someone in the trenches. And also great to hear that the city isn’t being abandoned! I look forward to your next report.
