My life, an operetta

The 1894 Grand Opera House

The 1894 Grand Opera House

Or is that a tad melodramatic?

I expect so, but speaking of theater, there is none grander than Galveston’s own Grand Opera House, a historic gem of a building and one of the first I can’t wait to see once I get back down to Galveston.

Notwithstanding the ravages of Hurricane Ike, and with many thanks to the hundreds of foot soldiers who spent untold weeks and months mopping up, shlepping mud, and tearing out sodden and moldy materials, this glorious old girl returns at last, in all her glorious splendor.

And just in the nick of time, it turns out, to host whom, earlier this year?

Why, none other than The Big Himself, Luciano Pavarotti! If only I could have been there … *sigh*

  • Kevin and I went there with friends to see the The Story of Bob Wills. Only in Texas right?? What a fabulous old building indeed. You can feel the history of her when you walk in the door. Her demeaonr is one of a playful and mischevious child on one hand, then as you ascend the stairs to the boxes, you know in an instant she’s been the unfaitful lover of all who have walked through her doors. Not unfaithful in a bawdy way (well maybe just a little) but with that Southern Belle “To know me is to love me” manner. Her character is different for each of us. One of which I”m sure has been portrayed on her grand stage. Just take your pick and she will not disappoint your expectations. One visit and you’ll be captivated. The place is run mostly by volunteers who’s hospitality is just exactly what you would expect this deep in the South. You can see in each of their faces that they are thrilled to have you as their guest and that they too are hooked for life. (BTY the technical director is a good friend of mine from high school who has invited me to come see a show “anytime”)
