Wish I had a picture, but I don’t.
If I did, it would be of Willys’ curious expression, with that second eyelid in about half eclipse. Or, for another lunar analogy, he’s waning crescent yet still he yowls… Good Lordy!
But back to this afternoon. Left PT at 6:00 p.m. straight up. I had nabbed Willys earlier and stuffed him into his cat carrier, stationed on a shelf Jeff had rigged just behind the cab in the back of the pickup. Figured I’d better snatch him when he showed since he doesn’t show often. Jeepers had been hanging around as I was finishing my packing and cleanup, and I figured I’d grab him at the last minute. Bad idea. Just as I was ready to set sail, I looked around and…no Jeepers!
I called and I called and I called and I called and this was really stupid since Jeepers never comes when I call him. So with a little Willys yowling melody as the constant background of my life any more, I waited and waited, then got tired of waiting and calling and decided to fire up the truck and take a spin down to the gas station and scrape the bugs off the windshield just to mark time. Having done that, I drove back up to Root and, like the moron who keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, resumed my Jeepers calling.
But I finally gave up. Colorful words were expended and then, being completely exhausted, I decided to lie down on the living room hardwoods and see just how cranky my back would be if I tried for a little nap. Just about the time I closed my eyes, I felt a sniff on my face and there was Jeepers! So I said to him, Are you ready to go to Galveston, you little shit? And, not fluent in English, he didn’t say anything but blinked at me and I took that as an affirmative answer, swept him up, stuffed him in his (larger) dueling cat carrier, and off we flew!
There was a bit of a ferry wait in Kingston so we only made it as far as Cle Elum tonight. Willys fought it all the way but Jeepers has been a dream kitty. In fact, I’m staying at a motel that allows pets so I brought them both in tonight. Like the squeaky wheel he is, Willys got the lion’s share of attention this evening, or what was left of it, as I tried to calm him, to mostly no avail. The vet gave me some sedatives for the cats. Recommended dosage is one-half pill to one pill twice daily. Jeepers has had none and is doing just fine. Willys, on the other hand, has now had 3 pills and was still so cranky and yowly that I just packed him back into his cat carrier and took him to the pickup to spend the night. I’ve got to get some sleep!
So wish me and Jeepers a good-nighty! Hopefully, he won’t surprise me early in the morning with a song of his own but so far he’s been absolutely perfect. I’ve closed the windows on the truck canopy—yes, there’s enough air for Willys—so hopefully he won’t serenade my motel neighbors to the point of complaint, followed by expulsion.
And tomorrow? Well, we’ll see how far we get!
