I almost went there today.
If I weren’t so feeble-minded and had remembered to google it last night before I went to bed so that I’d have the exact location of that Texas intersection, I would have taken the extra couple of hours to drive up, north and east of Amarillo as I passed through today, just to stand there for a little while.
That movie impacted me profoundly the first time I saw it, not too long after I lost Jeff, when I was in the deepest, darkest, loneliest well of my entire life.
The story was such a richly woven tapestry of emotions, all of which I could relate to, and there were so many more subtle connections, too, from an island with palm trees looming in my future, to the angels’ wings guiding a new path, to the Texas connection, specifically, the Texas woman.
But mostly, with the emotional plane crash of my life, the resulting isolation, and the reevaluation of life it caused, I was Tom Hanks. I was Chuck Noland. Mostly I was Chuck.
So now I stand at a crossroads in my life, and standing at that particular crossroads, on this particular journey, would have been especially fitting. That movie helped to heal my soul.
Of course, now I know where the intersection is, at 1268 East and 48 South, in the dusty Panhandle of Texas. I could probably even find the farmhouse, in reality now a bed and breakfast at nearby Arrington Ranch.
But it was only a movie, Lindy. And this is real life. Your life. Your new life.
Time to start living it.

I recently watched that movie to, b/c it was filmed in sunny Fiji, just a hop skip and jump away from my future home of Vanuatu.
It was definitely a good movie, like most movies Tom Hanks is in. I’m hoping to avoid Chuck’s fate of crashing in the middle of the ocean, though I’m working on the old ice skate and rock approach to dentistry, just in case!
You are a brave and beautiful soul my friend. You leave me without words on this post. Imagine that!!! Don’t expect that EVER again! See you soon, perhaps even today your paradise awaits.
I guess you’re probably in Gilmer Springs by now. My, won’t Daddy be tickled! Have a great weekend! This time next week, we’ll BOTH be in Galveston! I can hardly wait! Have a safe trip, you and your little traveling buddy – the Jeepsinator.
