Happy to be here!

The weather’s great! What a lovely fall in Galveston. After a dry but thankfully not-so-hot summer, the rains finally came, perking up the palms and making us all smile.

Jeepers on the steps

Life is getting better.

So here’s a recent snapshot of my Galveston Islandy porch where I sit most evenings in my little rocking chair (to the left of the front door), watching the world go by.

It also makes a good vantage point for monitoring the comings and goings of my little black buddy, Mr. Jeepers (who can be seen here, exiting stage right).

My goal is a simple one: to keep him safe and out of harm’s way, that being the relatively busy thoroughfare out front that doubles as a racetrack on Saturday night. It’s one of the second-tier arterials in town and carries a good bit of traffic, spelling bad news for Jeepers, who tends to walk when he should be running.

Poor guy. This (not so) little fellow’s been used to living on another island, far removed from this one, on a quiet, dead-end road with no traffic to speak of and no neighborhood bullies to challenge him on his own turf (excepting the ubiquitous raccoons, of course, and nobody argues with them).

It’ll be up to him to figure it all out, and I have faith that his feline smarts will kick in and save the day, and hopefully his life.

But while he’s at it, learning the ropes, I’m keeping his back, with a broom for the bullies and worse for the bad drivers, if need be, because he’s my little buddy and a real good boy.

Speaking of his being a real good boy, how did I manage to get so lucky? That’s easy—Jeff picked him out. Which means I got real lucky twice.

  • What a beautiful vantage point it is!!! I’ve been back on the island a time or two since the last time we spoke but still not gettin out much. The weather has been so incredible lately, I must get out more. Not much on earth that can beat the Gulf beaches in the fall. TTY soon!!!
