OMG (as we say so succinctly in Internet-speak)! Or, better yet, how about a good old-fashioned WOW!
If you happen to be in the vicinity of the Strand and find yourself in the mood for a light yet sumptuous dinner, there’s only one place to go: Willie G’s at Pier 21 on the old downtown Galveston waterfront.
And while I’m at it, let me make this really simple for you and tell you exactly what to order. Got a pencil? Good! Here we go:
First, a nice bottle of wine. Get off on the right foot. Don’t be silly and waste time poring over the wine list. Just order the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling, a delicate, faintly sweet, smooth, and delicious nectar from my erstwhile home state of Washington and a long-time favorite of your humble author. Best not to question the judgment here; if you fail to order this wine, you will flog yourself later, guaranteed.
Next up and finally, two simple appetizers, both of which are absolutely the ambrosia of the gods.
The first is deadly delicious; the second, merely heavenly good.
Let’s begin with the deadly:
Oyster Bar Trash Blackened shrimp with crabmeat………….$15.99
A misleading moniker with a bare-bones description, this dish has nothing whatsoever to do with either (a) oysters or (b) trash. ORDER IT. ORDER IT NOW. (Hint: If you order two of these, I promise not to tell.)
And we finish with the heavenly (by definition, anything wrapped in bacon is divine):
Shrimp Cabo Gulf shrimp stuffed with Pepper Jack cheese, wrapped in Applewood bacon and lightly fried. Served with corn pico relish and roasted red pepper sauce……………………………..$9.99
YUM-YUM GOOD! Can’t beat the prices, certainly can’t beat the fare, and the harborside atmosphere, too, is a winner. Raggedy old Galvez scores another big hit. Thank you, Willie G’s!
