Enough already with government fees and taxes!
Now, if this vote were all about shoring up the seawall itself, that venerable stalwart of concrete, rebar, and riprap that protects our vulnerable little pile of sand against the inevitable onslaught of future destructive storms, well, that would be an entirely different matter.
And certainly I, and all my good and responsible island neighbors, would vote yes for such an essential expense, no doubt.
But this vote is not about protecting the island.
Instead, it’s all about imposing yet another burdensome government fee, and a not insubstantial one, to park your vehicle along Seawall Boulevard, purportedly to generate revenue to fund the City’s idea of seawall “enhancements,” whatever those might be.
Hmmm. Seems to me the seawall is wonderful enough already, just as it is.
For island residents and visitors alike, our little bit of heaven is the island itself, on a soothing, bathwater Gulf, where we can enjoy the giant brown pelicans diving for fish, the laughing gulls with their splendid black heads soaring aloft, the colorful and surprising seashells washing ashore, and the best damned shrimp and oysters I’ve ever tasted.
Enhancements? Don’t think we need any…
